Memorial for Terrie Ann Dauphinais
In May 2011, “Families of Sisters in Spirit” held a memorial for Terrie Ann Dauphinais at Victoria Island in Ottawa. In 2002, Terrie was murdered during the night in her home, which had no signs of forced entry. Terrie’s three children, toddlers at the time, were locked in their rooms where they remained until the morning when Terrie’s stepsister discovered her body the next morning. No charges have ever been laid. The children live with Terrie’s estranged husband who, at one time, was a person of interest in the case.
Living conditions in Cross Lake Manitoba.
Tuberculosis persists in poor and or overcrowded communities. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) the TB rate among Inuit has risen to 185 times the rate of others born in Canada. The rate among First Nations is 31 times higher. Cross Lake suffered an outbreak of TB in 2008. I visited the community to photograph the living conditions that contribute to TB for the Assembly of First Nations. Many thanks to the people of Cross Lake who invited me into their homes and their lives.
Walk4Justice
Walk4Justice is a grass roots movement founded by Gladys Radek which raises awareness of the plight of missing and/or murdered women and children. In 2008 women walked from Vancouver to Ottawa, where they were met by 300 supporters, to ask government for a public inquiry into the more than 500 aboriginal women who have gone missing or been murdered since the 1980s. Half of these cases have never been solved.
