Two aboriginal families, whose daughters have gone missing without a trace, are holding events this weekend in hopes their communities will rally to help.
In Manitoba, Wilfred and Bernice Catcheway are holding a barbecue fundraiser - rain or shine – at their home at 728 Poplar Bay, on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm. All funds raised will go toward organizing searches for their daughter Jennifer who has been missing for three years now. June 19 marks Jennifer Catcheway’s 21st birthday.
In Quebec, at the Kitigan Zibi reserve 2 hours north of Ottawa, families of Maisy Odjick and Shannon Alexander, are organizing a Run/Walk Fundraiser. There will be food and prizes. The race starts on Sunday June 19, at 9:00 am. All process will go toward a reward to help find the girls. Maisy and Shannon were last seen in the town of Maniwaki in September, 2008.
More than five hundred aboriginal women have gone missing or been murdered since the 1980s. Half of those cases have never been solved. Families say they must organize searches themselves because the cases are not getting enough attention from the police or media.
